SEWER PROJECTS

For more than 40 years, Hornor Brothers Engineers has been involved in the design and construction of storm and sanitary sewers. Today, adequate collection, treatment and disposal systems for wastewater continue to be ongoing concerns. These systems are expensive necessities whose cost can vary considerably with engineering design.

The Federal Clean Water Act of 1972, which initiated an effort to clean up our environment, has directed that all cities, towns and industries take affirmative steps toward eliminating the discharge of untreated sewage into our streams and rivers. Most larger cities have since come into compliance with this regulation. It has now fallen the responsibility of the smaller communities to do the same. Unfortunately, in 1990, the Environmental Protection Agency's construction grants program for federally funded wastewater collection and treatment systems was eliminated. It was replaced with a low interest State Revolving Fund (SRF) loan program which has proven to be an effective funding source for many communities.

This has challenged the engineering community to develop and employ more cost-effective means of collection and treatment of wastewater through alternative and innovative technology. Hornor Brothers Engineers is committed to meeting this challenge in serving the needs of the client. The firm's expertise in this field includes feasibility studies, facility planning, design, construction inspection, project management and start-up.

The following are brief descriptions of several projects that are either current or recently completed for which Hornor Brothers Engineers performed these services. All are in West Virginia:

1. PROJECT NAME: Quiet Dell Area Sewer Project
    LOCATION: Harrison County

    TOTAL PROJECT COST: $2,400,000
    PROJECT DESCRIPTION:   This project is Phase I of a two phase plan to provide sanitary sewer service from outskirts of the Town of Stonewood south along Route 20 to its intersection with Route 57 near Bel Meadows Country Club. The first phase will serve 112 existing homes between Stonewood and I-79 at Quiet Dell. This will be a collection system only with treatment provided at the City of Clarksburg's wastewater treatment plant. The project will be funded from the West Virginia Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council when funds become available.

2. PROJECT NAME: Lumberport Area Wastewater Collection and Treatment Project
    LOCATION: Harrison County

    TOTAL PROJECT COST: $7,000,000
    PROJECT DESCRIPTION:   The LAPSSD is comprised of the Town of Lumberport and the communities of Haywood and Cambria. This project was funded by an EPA grant and WV Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council loan. The design utilizes innovative/alternative technology in that collection is primarily achieved through a small diameter, variable-grade gravity system in conjunction with conventional gravity collection lines. The 160,000 gpd wastewater plant treats septic tank effluent . The collection system serves approximately 650 customers and consists of 112,000 ft. of 8", 6", and 4" SDR 35 sewer pipe, ductile iron river crossing pipe, 8 septic tank effluent pumping (STEP) stations, one main lift station and 390 septic tanks of varying sizes. The project began construction in October, 1997 and was operational in December, 1998.

3. PROJECT NAME: West Virginia Air Center Project
    LOCATION: Harrison County

    CURRENT STATUS: Operational; completed October, 1990
    PROJECT DESCRIPTION:   This work was a separate contract and part of the overall Air Center project (more fully described elsewhere). The sewer collection system was designed to serve two resident airport industries plus the control tower. The project consisted of approximately 1000 ft. of 8" gravity sewer, 950 ft. of 4" force main, six manholes and a lift station. The force main connected into the existing sewer system of the City of Bridgeport.
